MSMQ Explorer is a Windows application that allows developers and administrators to view and modify queues and messages on local and remote MSMQ integration servers. The tool is lightweight, auto updating and provides a host of useful features not found in the Windows MSMQ management tool.
Manage the full queue landscape
Both send and receive functions in MSMQ Explorer are based around tree representations of queues on the local or remote machine. From within the application, it is possible to delete and create public and private queues as well as purge them. Users can also peruse and purge journal, poison and retry sub-queues as well as system queues, permission permiting. MSMQ Explorer gives users complete confidence that they are working within the confines of their integration architecture.
Send plain text, binary or XML messages
MSMQ Explorer gives users the ability to load and edit XML and plain text messages directly within the application, complete with syntax highlighting and XML formatting. Using the new HexEdit control, binary messages can also be sent and received. Text and XML can be validated against an XML Schema Definition (XSD) where both errors and warning are reported, allowing users to validate messages before they are sent. Choosing the destination queue is as simple as selecting a queue in the explorer tree view, giving users full confidence that their message is going to the right place. User defined labels can be applied to all outgoing messages and clicking send will optionally re-evaluate XML for correctness before then sending to the target queue. Options are also available to set the “Time to Receive” and “Time to Queue” message properties, allowing straightforward testing of poison and retry message handling*.
Preview messages in formatted XML, text or binary
MSMQ Explorer gives the user the ability to view the contents of private, public and system queues without the need to “pop” messages. Simply click the queue name and see a sortable list of message messages and their properties. A double click will reveal the message contents in formatted, syntax highlighted XML for users to review or modify. Messages can be retrieved as either validated XML, plain text or even binary. Messages can also be popped / received in the appropriate order with the automatic application of a transaction, should the queue be so defined. Failure within the transaction will result in the message being returned to the queue**.
We are constantly improving and expanding MSMQ Explorer and updates are pulled directly into the application as and when you wish. Simply use the ‘Check for updates’ menu item to download the latest version: MSMQ Explorer will auto-update the next time it is launched or immediately, following the selection of the ‘Update now’ menu item. Updates are free for the life time of the major version of the product.

* – note that poison and retry sub-queues were introduced in MSMQ 3.0 and are not available in versions prior to this, such as those included with Windows Server 2003 and earlier.
** – note that due to a limitation in the ability of public queues to announce their transactional configuration, the “Transaction” checkbox must be manually checked or unchecked when receiving from a private queue.
